About the Feldenkrais Method®
Grace, elegance, power and control.
The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic education. Instead of being based on a model of learning where the participant is given a physical correction and asked to memorize it, participants learn how to hone their kinesthetic sense and proprioception in order to move more simply, easily and efficiently. This can help with repetitive strain injuries, chronic back pain, and other chronic pain such as tendonitis, as well as increasing skill and performance in athletes, musicians, dancers, and anyone else who wants to improve their coordination. Sessions can be in a group setting with verbal instruction, or can be one-on-one, where the practitioner guides the student's movement through touch. Feldenkrais believed that the essence of teaching involved creating the optimal conditions under which a student can learn, as well as stating that true freedom of choice could only exist if one had at least three choices. Using the Feldenkrais Method, students develop internal authority instead of relying on medical "experts" to "fix" them. |
